In the highlands of Peru, where the Andes Mountains and the Amazon Rainforest converge, lies a waterfall with cascading pools that many say resembles a bride’s veil. It was given the name Velo de Novia to match its picturesque curves. The same name is given to our new coffee which is a collaboration of 20 different small scale farms across the Jaen province of Peru.

Much of Peru’s population participates in the coffee industry. Agriculture and animal husbandry make up 50% of the country’s workforce, coffee and rice being the two most popular crops. The subtropical climate in the area gives ideal weather conditions for coffee growth, temperate year-round temperatures with steady rainfall throughout spring and summer, perfect for harvesting in the drier winter.

This is the third crop Loyal has received from Velo de Novia; it is a mixture of varietals, consisting of Typica, Catuai, and Pache. Grown under the shade of indigenous plantain trees and picked at the peak of ripeness, these beans went through a washed process to then be splayed out on patios and covered beds to dry in the sun.

When brewed, expect to taste juicy red apple, citrus, and sweet cherry. Making a pour over on Kalita Wave will bring out the fruity citric acid, which increases as the temperature of the cup decreases, but making a much larger batch brew is recommended. This coffee is a well rounded crowd pleaser, an unassuming step towards more fruity single origins for the daily medium roast drinker. Once brewed, expect to fill cup after cup.
