The Farm

The history of coffee is deeply rooted in Yemen. First discovered in Ethiopia, the coffee plant quickly made its way across the Red Sea into Yemen, where, in the 16th century, it became so synonymous with the country that we still use their shipping port’s name in the industry today: Mocha. At first a secret kept tightly under wraps, the plant was eventually smuggled out to make its way around the world; almost all of today’s Arabica coffee varieties can be traced back to a Yemeni parent plant. It’s important to take all of this into consideration when brewing our new offering from Yemen. These beans, a Ja’adi varietal exclusive to the Yemeni region, were grown from centuries-old traditions within one of the oldest coffee cultures in the world. You now get to experience and become a part of its lineage.

Mokha King Coffee (Yemen Coffee exporter) worked with the farmers of Bani Ahlas, a small village just three hours inland of Yemen’s western coast, to gift us this new coffee. Historically, the village farmland was used for growing Qa-at, a popular narcotic native to the area. Now replaced with coffee trees, the land is taking less water away from the village basin while providing farmers with a more positive impact on their economy and local community.
