There is a lot to be said about our new beans from Abana Coffee. Hailing from the southwestern Oromia region of Ethiopia, the name Abana translates from Arabic to mean ‘our fathers,’ which pays honor to the birthplace of Arabica coffee. The beans themselves were named Anderacha after the river that borders the Abana estate. In the rainy season, the Anderacha River overflows and brings new life to the surrounding community, much like how Loyal strives to bring life to our community through coffee.
The processing methods used on the farm help give back to the surrounding environment as well. Abana Anderacha is a washed coffee, a process that is well known for making immense amounts of water waste. Abana Coffee Farm counteracts this by discarding their water waste in a designated lagoon so that it will slowly seep into and be filtered naturally by the soil underneath, giving back to the natural water cycle of the ecosystem.
Another unique aspect of these washed beans is that they were set in the sun to rest for anywhere between 18 to 24 hours before heading off to the washing station. This additional step allows the cherry to break down and ferment just slightly, creating more intense and gratifying aromas. After their short nap in the sun, the cherries go off to a wet mill to be washed, then laid out in partial shade to dry, periodically being checked on and sorted until they have the perfect amount of moisture, 12%.
When brewed, one can taste juicy white peach, a floral hibiscus, and a sweet cocoa butter that’s reminiscent of white chocolate. This coffee would be a great first step for someone wanting to branch out from traditional flavors and dip their toe into something more unique without getting too wild.
