The Farm

In the center of the Oromia region in southwestern Ethiopia, surrounded by old-growth highland forests, sits Abana Farms. Translated to ‘our fathers’ in Arabic, Abana pays homage to the deep roots and origins of wild Arabica coffee, indigenous to this area of Ethiopia. Established in 2009 on a 300-hectare lot near the village of Gera, the people behind Abana believe their work to produce the best specialty coffee is as fundamentally important as their positive impact on the community. As environmental stewards, they utilize a water recycling wet mill, implement proper waste disposal, and work to preserve the forest canopy. Along with these ecological initiatives they also promote fair wages and social programs including facilitating medical projects and investing in infrastructure.

The name Sulladjah means ‘on the hill’ and is the highest point of Abana at 2200 MASL. Surrounded by dense forest and a freshwater spring that cascades down the mountainside, a community of people live and work in that area of the farm. Sulladjah is a natural processed coffee that is a mix of heirloom varieties that are carefully hand-sorted, washed, and dried on raised beds. This attention to detail results in a coffee that is fruity, balanced, and sweet. Juicy blackberry and peach are accentuated by a body reminiscent of cream candy. Exploring the complexity of these ripe fruits is perfectly suited for pour overs using either a Kalita Wave or Hario V-60.
